The most common eye cancers actually don’t start there.
Many cancers that start in other organs (e.g., breast and lung) can metastasize to the eye. Because of the location of these metastases in the choroid, they are diagnosed as choroidal metastases.
Choroidal metastasis is the most common intraocular malignancy that is caused by multiple primary cancers in the body that metastasize to the eye due to the high blood flow and perfusion that provides an environment receptive to metastasis and tumor growth. Approximately 22,000 patients have choroidal metastasis globally every year and approximately three quarters of the patients with choroidal metastasis have, in decreasing order, primary breast, lung, gastrointestinal, prostate, skin melanoma and kidney tumors.
BELZUPACAP SAROTALOCAN (BEL-SAR) IN CHOROIDAL METASTASIS
Bel-sar’s mechanism of action does not depend on specific mutations in the genetic profile of the tumor or on the expression of a particular type of growth factor receptor, but rather on the modified tumor-associated glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) that are highly and specifically expressed on the cell membrane of many solid tumors. We believe this makes bel-sar a good potential treatment option for choroidal metastasis which can be caused by multiple different primary tumors.
